Actors Who Wrote Their Dream Role

Issa Rae

Before she wrote the pilot for Insecure, Issa Rae created a web series called The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl.

“Someone told me I should call the series ‘Awkward Girl’, otherwise people would focus on the fact I’m Black. I wanted to create space for a character who is an awkward Black girl.”

She listened to her gut, and her self-produced web series became the foundation for the Emmy-winning HBO hit show.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Did you know that Fleabag started out as a 10 minute piece?
Long before the one-woman show that debuted at Edinburgh, Phoebe just started writing.

“It started as a challenge from a friend to do a 10-minute slot in her stand-up storytelling night...It was driven by that sense of rage. What if I just said onstage what I say to my friend?"

She went on to write the 2-season award-winning tv show.

Michaela Coel

Michaela Coel was a working actress and writer when a real life experience changed her life. Now it’s probably not appropriate to call this a “dream role,” but it is an important role that has had an enormous impact on our culture.
“I based the character of Arabella on myself, especially in the beginning. She’s a writer and she takes a break from work, she goes out for a drink, her drink is spiked...This was also my story, but it’s also about loads more.”

Brit Marling

Before she was the Showrunner and star of The OA, Brit Marling was a frustrated actress, who was tired of the kind of roles she was called in for.
So she did something about it.

“When I started out, I did it out of necessity because I couldn’t figure out ways to act that didn’t involve… being bent over the back of a car slathered in Italian salad dressing! So I started writing.”

Finally Write Your Dream Role

About Emily Grace

I’m Emily Grace, and I totally get you. I know how frustrating it is to feel like you’re on the outside looking in when it comes to the entertainment industry.

After I landed the lead role in a Sundance award-winning film (that I hustled my way into on my own), I thought I had made it and the industry would come to me. And do you know what happened? Nothing.

I struggled to even get an agent to represent me. I felt like I was banging on a door that, no matter what I tried, was just never going to open. That's what inspired me to learn how to write.

When you can write, you get to take your success into your own hands, create projects that mean something to you, and give representation to the kind of stories you want to see (and roles you want to play). And the best part is, you don't need anyone's permission!

If you’re tired of waiting for permission or for the industry to pick you, it’s time to take matters into your own hands!

Your story, your voice, and your perspective matters. When you listen to that voice in your head that whispers, “write your story…” the one only you can tell, the one only you can play, that is the dream role that will put you on the map and get the industry to finally wake up and take notice.

Even if you don't have an idea for a project or you've never written before, I can help. You've got this!

Be bold.

"Emily helped me realize that I can be direct and bold in my language, and that the thing I was afraid to say in my script is actually the thing that grabs the listener."

Karole Foreman

In Pre-Production

"I had never written a screenplay before and now I'm in pre-production for my short film! If you're serious about creating your own work, this is a great place to be."

Kelly Camille Patterson

Get off the fence and get creating!

"I am not too small to be able to write, pitch and or produce my own stories to networks and content distributors. My eyes have been open to a new world of producing and being a content creator."

Cherene R Francis

This is my dream role

"Since working with Emily I've made my script even stronger..I am in great shape to move into pre-production with a script that truly reflects my dream role, and that feels totally doable!"
